I’ve been lucky enough to travel to Greece more times than I can count, and each trip feels like the first: full of magic, history, unbelievable food, and stunning views that never get old.
If you’re planning your own Greek adventure, here’s my updated guide with personal favorites, a few splurges, and some hidden gems:
Athens
Start your journey in Athens, the capital that beautifully blends ancient history with modern vibrancy.
Where to Stay:
- Hotel Grande Bretagne – Still a classic, right on Syntagma Square. The rooftop view of the Acropolis is iconic.
- Four Seasons Astir Palace – A luxurious resort just outside the city in Vouliagmeni. Beachside bliss, perfect if you want your trip to start with a little sun and serenity.
Some of my favorite things to do in Athens are:
- Visit the Acropolis – A must. Go early in the morning or late afternoon to beat the heat and the crowds.
- Hike up Lycabettus Hill – For sweeping views of the city.
- Shop Kolonaki – High-end boutiques, chic cafés, and great people‑watching.
- Wander Monastiraki – An eclectic outdoor market packed with local goods.
- Dinner in Glyfada – Casual shopping, beach clubs, and buzzy restaurants with ocean views.
Bonus:
- Take a day trip to Delphi for ancient ruins and some of the best sunset views in mainland Greece.
- Add a stay at Cape Sounio on the Athens Riviera – a serene wellness resort endorsed by Gwyneth Paltrow, offering the new Elevations of Wellness program that merges traditional Greek healing with modern therapeutic treatments right by the Temple of Poseidon.
Mykonos
Ah, Mykonos—my forever favorite. While it’s known for its nightlife, it’s absolutely possible to experience it in a low‑key, luxurious way.
Where to Stay:
- Cavo Tagoo Mykonos – Stylish and sceney with those signature cave‑style suites.
- Belvedere Hotel – Right in town, perfect for walking to dinner and drinks.
- Kalesma Mykonos – A newer boutique option, peaceful yet luxurious with amazing views.
Must‑Do’s:
- Beach Days: Head to Psarou for glam beach lounging (home of Nammos), or Scorpios for a vibey sunset scene. For dancing on tables, check out Paradise or Super Paradise.
- Boat Day: Rent one to explore remote beaches and swim in hidden coves.
- Sunset Cocktails: Caprice remains my favorite bar in town—romantic, lively, and quintessentially Mykonian.
- Mykonos Town: Lose yourself in the twisty whitewashed alleys. No cars, just charm. Grab a gyro from Jimmy’s and pop into chic boutiques and galleries along the way.
Santorini
Santorini is the postcard‑perfect island you’ve seen a million times—and somehow it’s even more breathtaking in person.
Where to Stay:
- Canaves Oia, Katikies, or Grace Hotel – All splurges, all worth it for those caldera views.
- Cavo Tagoo Santorini – Modern luxury with wow‑factor suites.
- Aenaon Villas in Imerovigli – A boutique collection of just seven villas perched high above the caldera ridge, with 360° sea views, an infinity pool, and personalized service.
What to Do:
- Sunset in Oia – It’s the thing. Go early to get a spot.
- Volcanic Beaches: Visit the Red and Black Sand beaches for dramatic landscapes.
- Santorini Wine Tasting: Don’t leave without sipping some Assyrtiko. Most vineyards offer tastings with views.
- Eat Like a Local: Try the fava (yellow split pea puree) and tomato fritters—or recreate it at home with our Santorini Fava recipe.
Peloponnese
If you’re looking to experience authentic Greece, head south to the Peloponnese—a region rich in history, beauty, and soul.
Highlights:
- Costa Navarino – A luxury resort tucked into nature with golf, beaches, and world‑class service. One of my favorite places anywhere.
- Koroni – My family's hometown. A peaceful seaside village with incredible food, friendly locals, and no big hotels—just charm. 🌿
- Explore Sparta, Kalamata, or Tripoli for glimpses of old‑world Greece with fewer tourists.
Other Island Loves
Still have time? You can’t go wrong with these gems:
- Paros – Great beaches, charming towns, and a more laid‑back vibe than Mykonos.
- Kefalonia – Lush and quiet with unreal blue waters.
- Corfu – Venetian charm meets Greek hospitality.
- Crete – A massive island with something for everyone: beaches, history, hiking, and unbeatable food.
Final Thoughts
Greece is more than just a vacation. It’s a sensory reset—a place that feeds your soul through food, culture, sun, and the sea. I hope this guide inspires your next adventure or helps you plan your first one.
And remember: Everyone needs a Greek vacation at least once in their lives. Some of us need many more than just one. 😉
Happy travels!
